That being said, ceramic filters work so well because they can be re-surfaced, and have good lifespan vs cost. The downside is weight, but with a ceramic filter you're kind of going to be dealing with that no matter what. I use this primarily now, and it's superior in every measurable way. If I were you, I'd forget both of these entry level pumps, and drop the money on a katadyn Combi. I only have two nights experience with the katadyn and I found the pumping motion to be frustrating as well, but not as much as the MSR. The MSR also has an awkward pumping motion. The pump-levers are poorly constructed, the plastic is flimsy, and the hinge mechanism on the MSR especially is wear-prone and allows you torque it in ways that aren't good for the handle or pinion.
